The affiliation data for the month of January are bad data and mark the biggest fall in employment, measured in terms of affiliation, in the last three years, stated Foro de Logística. News published by the Diario del Puerto. SEE LINK HERE
MADRID. During the past month of January, the negative trend in the level of affiliation has continued in the logistics sector. This decrease in the number of social security affiliates places the sector with 1,037,150 affiliates, 12,447 less than in the month of December 2023.
The performance of employment in January 2023 is the worst in the last three years, despite the fact that January is a month that historically loses employment, but not at this level. These data still set off all the alarm bells and confirm the slowdown in the economy and in consumption.
Of the total number of affiliated workers in the Logistics sector last January, 825,061 belonged to the general scheme and another 212,089 to the self-employed social security scheme. The dynamics of the month of January shows that the fall in affiliates has been in the general regime, with a decrease of -12,632 affiliates, which represents a fall of 1.6%.
Employment among the Self-Employed, on the other hand, saw a slight increase of only 186 persons. With these results, the share of the self-employed in Logistics in the total economy remained stable at 20.5%.
Land transport activities are the only ones holding their own in this black month of January for logistics employment, with Social Security enrolment growing by 456 jobs. The greatest loss of employment is concentrated in warehousing activities, which lost 5,900 affiliates, and in postal and courier activities, which lost 6,067 affiliates, 5.72 % less than in December 2023. Air transport in January also recorded a fall in enrolment of 926 people, leaving 41,606 jobs, according to the Logistics Forum.
The number of contracts signed in the month of December 2023 in Logistics reached a total of 825,061 contracts, which represents a decrease of 1.2% (12,632 fewer contracts) compared to December 2023. The biggest drop in hiring is in temporary contracts and new permanent contracts.
January is historically a bad month for logistics employment, but this year the drop is double that of January 2022 and 2023. ‘This data, which we at Foro de Logística had already been announcing in view of the trend in the last quarter of 2023, confirms all our forecasts and shows a drop in activity in the sector, mainly due to the fall in consumption and the international tensions that have led to a decrease in international trade’, he indicated. Land transport is the only activity that has withstood the employment rate in January, with warehousing and postal and courier activities being the most affected. For the coming months, especially February 2024, we can anticipate a fall in employment in all activities, as this is not usually a good month for logistics either and the economic and international situation does not look set to improve.
